MEDICAL DIRECTOR
PROFESSOR STEPHEN BUSTIN

Templar Laboratories Medical Director Professor Stephen Bustin is a prominent British scientist and former professor of Molecular Science at Queen Mary University of London and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry (2004-2012).

Having obtained his B.A. and PhD from Trinity College Dublin in molecular genetics, general areas of interest include the small and large bowel, the process of invasion and metastasis in colorectal cancer – and translating molecular techniques into clinical practice by including molecular parameters in clinical staging of tumours.

Professor of Molecular Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University since 2015 – and fellow of the Society of Biology – Professor Bustin’s research in polymerase chain reaction is industry leading. His 2004 book ‘A-Z of Quantitative PCR’ has been called ‘the bible of qPCR.’

In 2009 he developed the MIQE guidelines, a set of protocols regarding how PCR tests should be performed to ensure reliability – and to make replication of experiments easier. This is the fifth most cited paper published in ‘Clinical Chemistry,’ with over 1700 citations as of 2013.

Professor Bustin testified on behalf of the US Department of Justice in 2007 as part of the Omnibus Autism Proceeding (Cedillo v. Secretary of Health and Human Services), stating the unreliability of lab results. After John O’Leary’s Unigenetics laboratory in Dublin claimed to find measles virus in the intestines of children with developmental disorders, Professor Bustin concluded, “O’Leary’s results were caused by defective experimental technique and inappropriate interpretation of results, since he was detecting DNA, and measles virus does not exist as DNA.”

Described as “one of the most highly qualified and credible expert witnesses I [the Special Master] have ever encountered,” Professor Bustin has since testified in criminal trials where DNA and other testing has constituted evidence.
